Does Dyslexia Affect Your Ability to Drive?

Dyslexia primarily affects reading, spelling, and processing written information — not the physical and spatial skills required for driving. Many people with dyslexia are excellent drivers: spatial awareness, pattern recognition, and intuitive hazard perception can actually be strengths.

The main challenges are in areas that involve reading and processing written or verbal instructions quickly — the theory test and some aspects of following sat nav instructions.

Theory Test Accommodations

The DVSA offers the following accommodations for learners with dyslexia:

• Extra time — up to double time for the multiple choice section
• Voiceover — all questions read aloud through headphones
• Larger text — available on screen
• Reader/Recorder — in exceptional circumstances, a human reader can be provided

To access these, contact the DVSA when booking your theory test and provide evidence of your diagnosis (e.g., an educational psychologist's report or GP letter).

Finding a Dyslexia-Friendly Instructor

Not all instructors are trained in supporting learners with learning differences. Look for ADIs who:

• Use visual demonstrations rather than purely verbal instructions
• Are patient with repetition and adapted explanation styles
• Have experience with learners who have dyslexia or other learning differences
• Don't rely heavily on written handouts or verbal-only feedback

Ask explicitly when contacting an instructor: "Do you have experience teaching learners with dyslexia?" A good instructor will welcome the question.

Theory Test Preparation for Dyslexic Learners

• Use audio-based revision apps rather than books
• Watch video explanations of Highway Code rules on YouTube
• Practise the hazard perception test extensively — this is often a relative strength for visual thinkers
• Take practice tests with the voiceover feature active so you're familiar with it
• Focus on understanding rules conceptually rather than memorising wording

The Practical Test: Playing to Your Strengths

The practical driving test is assessed on real-world driving performance — observation, control, judgement. These are largely physical and instinctive skills where dyslexia has minimal impact. Many dyslexic learners find the practical test significantly more straightforward than the theory.

Do You Need to Declare Dyslexia to the DVLA?

Dyslexia alone is not a notifiable condition for driving purposes. You only need to notify the DVLA of conditions that affect your ability to drive safely. Dyslexia doesn't typically meet this threshold. If in doubt, consult your GP.
