The DVSA 2-Change Rule Explained: What It Means for Your Driving Test
From May 2026, each driving test booking can only be changed twice. Here's exactly what counts as a change, how to avoid wasting yours, and how Swappy helps you use them wisely.
The Rule in Plain English
Once you book a practical driving test, you can change the date or time a maximum of two times. After that, the booking is locked. If you cancel, it also counts as a change — so cancel carefully.
What Counts as a "Change"?
Moving your test to a different date
Changing the time of your test
Cancelling your test
Changing test centre (in some cases)
Swapping your test date via Swappy (each learner calls DVSA)
1 change per person, same as any reschedule
Failing your test and rebooking
DVSA cancels your test (not your fault)
How to Avoid Wasting Your Changes
With only two changes allowed, every decision matters. Here's how to be strategic:
- Only book when you're close to test-ready. Don't book speculatively — a booking you're not ready to use wastes a change when you move it.
- Use Swappy to get an earlier date. A swap costs one change — the same as any other date move. But with Swappy, you get the exact date you want, not a random one.
- Save a change for emergencies. Illness, a car breakdown, or a family emergency could force a last-minute reschedule. Having one change in reserve is wise.
- Check your DVSA account. You can see how many changes you've used in your DVSA account online.
Does a Test Swap Count as a Change?
Yes — when you swap your test via Swappy, you use one of your two changes (you change to your new date, your partner changes to your old date). This is no different to any standard date change — the DVSA doesn't know or care that you're swapping.
The benefit of Swappy is that you target the exact date you want — so you're unlikely to need to change again. With a cancellation checker, you might grab a random slot and then want to change again, burning through your allowance.
What Happens If You Run Out of Changes?
Once you've used both changes, your booking is locked. You cannot move the date or time. If you can't make it, you'll forfeit the test fee and need to start a fresh booking — which puts you at the back of the queue with a new wait time.
This is why using Swappy strategically — to get the right date first time — is so valuable under the new rules.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do the two changes reset if I fail my test?
No — the two-change limit applies to your booking. If you fail and rebook a brand new test, you get a fresh two-change allowance for the new booking.
Does changing centre count as a change?
Changing test centre may count as a change in some circumstances. Check the DVSA website or call 0300 200 1122 for the current rules.
What if the DVSA cancels my test?
If the DVSA cancels your test (e.g. due to examiner unavailability), this does not count against your change allowance. You'll be rebooked without penalty.
Can my ADI change the date for me?
No — from May 2026, only the learner can make changes to their own booking. Your ADI can advise but cannot act for you.
