If your job involves driving a company vehicle, your licence type matters. Here's what UK employers actually require — and how this is changing as EVs arrive.

Why Fleet Licence Type Matters

Many jobs in the UK require employees to drive company vehicles. These range from sales representatives using a company car to delivery drivers, field engineers, and social workers. If you hold an automatic-only licence, you are legally restricted from driving a manual company vehicle — even in an emergency.

Which Industries Typically Require Manual Licences

  • Emergency services: Police, ambulance, and fire fleets are predominantly manual. Most emergency driving roles require a full manual licence.
  • Delivery and logistics: Vans (up to 3.5 tonnes) can be automatic or manual. Older delivery fleets skew manual.
  • Sales and field roles: Company cars are increasingly automatic — this is one area where automatic licences are growing in acceptance.
  • Utilities and telecoms: Older fleets are often manual; newer fleets are moving to electric vans (automatic).
  • Construction and agriculture: Site vehicles and specialist equipment often require manual licences.

The EV Transition: Changing the Conversation

As companies transition their fleets to EVs ahead of the 2035 new car sales mandate, fleet vehicles are becoming overwhelmingly automatic. Major fleet operators (BT, Amazon, Royal Mail) have already transitioned significant portions of their delivery fleets to electric vans — all automatic.

For someone entering the workforce in 2026, an automatic licence may well cover the entire fleet they'll ever drive in their career — depending on their industry.

Checking Your Employer's Requirements

Before choosing automatic lessons, check your employer's (or desired employer's) fleet requirements:

  1. Review the job description for licence category requirements
  2. Ask HR directly whether the fleet is manual or automatic
  3. Check whether the company is transitioning to EVs and on what timeline

Upgrading From Automatic to Manual

If you hold an automatic licence and need a manual for a job, you must pass an additional practical test in a manual vehicle. There's no theory test required. The practical test is the same format but in a manual car. Most people with automatic driving experience take 10–20 lessons to adapt to manual before taking this test.

Our Advice for Career-Minded Learners

If you're learning to drive with a specific career in mind:

  • Emergency services, HGV, and construction careers: take manual
  • Office-based, technology, or services careers: automatic is likely sufficient
  • Unsure: take manual for maximum long-term flexibility
