Can Someone Sit in the Back During Your Driving Test?
Yes — but there are specific rules about who can be an observer and what they're allowed to do.
Who Can Be an Observer?
Your driving instructor
A family member or friend aged 16+
Another person you nominate
Observer Rules
•Must sit in the back seat
•Cannot speak, gesture, or communicate with you during the test
•Cannot interact with the examiner
•The examiner can ask them to leave if they break the rules
Why bring an observer?
Having your instructor observe helps them give you targeted feedback if you fail. Some learners also feel calmer knowing a familiar face is in the car.
