Data & StatsTop 10 Reasons People Fail Their Driving Test
Based on DVSA data — these are the faults that catch learners out the most. Know them, avoid them, pass first time.
Not checking mirrors enough
Especially before signalling, changing direction, or changing speed. Examiners watch your eyes.
Incorrect positioning at roundabouts
Wrong lane approach or cutting across lanes on exit. Practise multi-lane roundabouts specifically.
Lack of steering control
Wandering in the lane, mounting kerbs during manoeuvres, or not straightening up after turns.
Inappropriate speed
Too fast for conditions OR too slow and holding up traffic. Both are faults.
Moving off unsafely
Not checking blind spots before pulling away. Every single time — even in quiet streets.
Poor response to traffic lights
Creeping forward on red, hesitating on green, or running amber. Decisive action is key.
Incorrect use of signals
Signalling too late, too early, or not at all. Also: forgetting to cancel indicators.
Poor positioning on the road
Driving too close to parked cars, or too far left/right on normal roads.
Not responding to road markings
Ignoring lane markings, bus lanes, or keep-clear zones.
Reverse parking errors
Not checking all around before and during the manoeuvre, or finishing too far from the kerb.
