Can You Use Your Own Car for the Driving Test?

Yes you can — but your car must meet strict DVSA requirements or the test will be cancelled on the spot.

Your Car Must Have:

  • Roadworthy with valid MOT (if over 3 years old)
  • Valid tax and insurance covering you as a learner
  • L-plates (or D-plates in Wales) front and rear
  • Working seatbelts for all seats
  • Interior mirror and both door mirrors
  • Headrest on the passenger seat (for the examiner)
  • No warning lights on the dashboard
  • No additional rear-view mirror for the examiner needed

✅ Pros

  • You're used to the car's clutch, brakes, and size
  • No hire fee from your instructor
  • More confidence in a familiar vehicle

❌ Cons

  • You're responsible if something's wrong with the car
  • Test cancelled if the car doesn't meet standards
  • L-plates are your responsibility
