What Does the DVSA Actually Do?

You're about to spend a lot of time dealing with the DVSA — here's who they are and what they do.

What DVSA stands for

Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency. It's an executive agency of the Department for Transport.

What they do

They set driving test standards, conduct practical and theory tests, approve driving instructors, and enforce vehicle safety standards.

How many tests they run

About 2 million practical driving tests per year across 400+ test centres in England, Scotland, and Wales.

How to contact them

Phone: 0300 200 1122 (Mon-Fri 8am-5pm, option 2). This is the same number you and your swap partner each call to swap your tests — both learners call separately, on the same day.

Need to call the DVSA to swap?

Find a swap partner on Swappy first, then you each call the DVSA on the same day. Premium gets the shared two-call plan.
